Migraines have become a common issue today. 12%-15% of people in the world have been reported to be affected by migraines and headaches each day.
Causes for Migraines:
Sensory overload
Sleep pattern changes
Anxiety
Diet
Stress
Weather pattern changes
Nausea
Hormonal changes
Dehydration
Excess amount of caffeine
Alcohol
Medications
Migraine Symptoms:
There are four stages that a migraine can go through. However, not everyone experiences all four stages.
Prodrome:
This stage tends to occur one to two days before migraines occur. This stage includes symptoms that can hint that a migraine will take place soon, such as mood changes, constant exhaustion, food cravings, constipation, increased thirst and urination, and a stiff neck.
Aura:
This stage tends to occur before or during the migraine, depending on the person. Everyone's aura stage is different, but the majority are visual. The symptoms of a visual aura stage include vision loss and visual phenomena. Symptoms of non-visual aura stages are having difficulty moving a particular part of your body, jerking of the body, feeling weak and numb, and having a difficult time speaking.
Attack:
The attack stage of the migraine is the actual migraine itself. The frequency, longevity, and pain of migraine depend from person to person. The migraine can cause anxiety, stress, difficulty sleeping, throbbing pain, and sensitivity to smells and lights.
Postdrome:
The postdrome stage is the aftermath of the migraine. This stage typically includes exhaustion, nausea, sensitivity to light, and sudden head movements.
How to prevent migraines (without treatment):
Preventing migraines altogether is difficult without treatment, but a person can take precautions to help with their frequency. Many people have reported that practicing physical activity regularly, using stress management techniques, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, keeping a headache diary, and keeping a healthy diet can help.
Migraines are something that occurs regularly to many people in the world, and it is essential to be educated on the subject in case of an emergency. I hope that this blog post has helped with the understanding of migraines, how they occur, and how to prevent them to multiple people!
